By the time you read this, I should be on my way to Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron, N.M. for some winter camping with Kirtland's Scout Troop 85.

The camping adventure is called Kanik, Inuit for snowflake, and its purpose is to show us how to camp comfortably in cold weather.

I realize that camping in the winter in the mountains of New Mexico isn't everyone's idea of a vacation.

But New Mexico is ideal for winter activities and sports. The snow cover makes much of the beautiful scenery that much better, and we enjoy many sunny days and great opportunities. You don't have to go far, and if you want to take a trip, there are all sorts of opportunities, and package deals that include equipment and transportation.

Outdoor Recreation always has several winter activities scheduled, such as snow shoeing, downhill skiing and snow boarding, cross-country skiing and sightseeing tours. Look for further information about these trips in this and future issues of the Nucleus, or call them directly at 846-1275.

We are all tempted to indulge ourselves with some extra calories during the holiday season, and for many of us, it is just silly to try to stay on the straight-and-narrow. We would feel deprived.

On the other hand, we can enjoy ourselves just as much, if not more, by planning some physical activities in between those bouts of indulgence. More importantly, if we remain or begin to be physically active during our holidays, we will be right on track for a great start to the New Year.

This is also a good time to find new activities that you can enjoy with friends or family. With a little effort, you can combine valuable time with friends and family together with your fitness activities.

Physical fitness plays such an important role in the Air Force community and the benefits of better overall health and strengthening the ties in our relationships with loved ones will contribute to the well-being of each one of us.

My family and I wish all of you a safe and happy New Year and I look forward to the challenges we'll tackle together in 2008.
