The above graphic shows the decreasing EDB, or ethylene dibromide, concentrations in the Kirtland/Ridgecrest plume. The evidence of plume collapse and its decrease in mass is only within the pump and treat area for the past four years.

Modeling, before the pump and treat method, showed the projected collapse of the plume. The plume capture model currently confirms the collapse by pump and treat, as seen here.

Bulk Fuels Facility Cleanup Project

In November 1999, the Air Force detected evidence of a fuel leak in an underground pipeline at the Bulk Fuels Facility on Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. Now, through a unique partnership between the Air Force, regulators, and the Albuquerque community, significant progress is being made to clean up the fuel plume and to ensure drinking water supply wells continue to provide safe, clean drinking water to Albuquerque residents.

  • The next public meeting is scheduled for July 27, 2023, 5 - 7 p.m. This meeting will be held on Kirtland AFB at the BFF Water Treatment Facility. Attendees should access the base through the Ridgecrest Gate, located near the intersection Ridgecrest Dr. SE and Louisiana Blvd SE, which is just south of Gibson & Louisiana Blvd intersection.

The public meetings are an opportunity to learn about the work being performed to address and remove groundwater contamination caused by a historical leak at the old Base Bulk Fuels Facility. Air Force environmental experts explain clean-up activities and answer questions.
