Field trip

Wayne Bitner, chief of environmental restoration for Kirtland's Installation Support Team (Air Force Civil Engineer Center), speaks to community members, geologists and hydrologists near the site of the Kirtland Air Force Base fuel spill during a field trip Oct. 21. Bitner discussed the base's remediation efforts, including soil vapor extraction, where fuel vapor is drawn from purpose-built wells near where the fuel leaked into the ground. The group made two other stops, one at Montessa Park to discuss the general geology of the Rio Grande Basin, and one at Chavez Community Center, where three monitoring wells have been drilled. Among those who participated in the field trip were professionals from the New Mexico Environment Department, U.S. Geological Survey, New Mexico Bureau of Geology, Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority, U.S. Air Force, Air Force Civil Engineering Center and CB&I.
