The Mighty Ninety recently welcomed Chief Master Sgt. Donald A. Pedro, Senior Enlisted Leader to the Secretary of the Air Force Office of Diversity and Inclusion, to discuss the ongoing issues with racism in the Cheyenne community and his role in the strategic integration of D&I within the Department of the Air Force.

Pedro focused his visit on meeting with Airmen and learning about the mission of the 90 MW, taking back first-hand knowledge of the experiences of Wranglers.

“Although a small team, we are focused on addressing these issues across the DAF,” said Pedro. Unfortunately, the problems faced by Airmen here are not unique. Senior leaders are aware and working toward positive solutions for military families and stronger community relationships.

“The Chief Pedro visit was a relief and show of faith of how our efforts are serving a larger purpose,” said Master Sgt. Quintara Wright, 90th Missile Wing D&I president. “Throughout several dialogues, topics were discussed and new objectives were created for Pedro to take back to the Pentagon. Seeing higher-level involvement beyond email greatly built upon the morale and efforts generated by the local D&I team.”

Although solutions to the issues are not linear, progress has spread through the community. Some changes include a city anti-bias ordinance, the implementation of a Laramie County School District program aimed at keeping children safe and comfortable in their environment, as well as supportive remarks by local leaders.

“We need support from the citizens, people who live in the community each and every day,” said Chief Master Sgt. Nicholas Taylor, 90th Missile Wing Command Chief. “The ones that aren’t at the leadership level of the city, but the citizens who shop in the stores. It takes the whole community, every citizen, to be a part of solving the challenges here.”

“We are grateful to have the opportunity to host Chief Pedro and discuss ways forward for our entire team,” said Col. Catherine Barrington, 90th Missile Wing Commander.  “Taking care of Airmen and their families goes hand-in-hand with accomplishing our nuclear mission.  Our people are our greatest strength, and we will always advocate and take action when needed.”
