TOUR DE FRANCE
The East Fitness Center is hosting an incentive program to get people active by riding their bikes outdoors, in the gym on stationary bikes or by taking a cycling class. Individuals will ride like Lance Armstrong by charting the miles they ride. As they pass each mile stone they will receive a small prize. For more information call 846-5104.

VOLUNTEER RAFT GUIDE
Starting in April you can be trained as a volunteer raft guide for the summer season. Training will be held most weekends in April. Training includes CPR, First Aid, ACA Swift Water Rescue Training and Certificate, ACA Raft Guide Training and Certificate and a chance to be part of a great team. Training costs $100 and will be fully refunded at the end of the season to guides who complete all training, are chosen to be part of the volunteer team and fulfill their guiding commitment. Outdoor Recreation offers trips from 1/2 day to multi-day and run from May to September, depending on water conditions. Call 846-1499 for more information or to sign up.

Outdoor Recreation
Lunar Snowshoe Hike Trip. Scheduled for Jan. 31, 5:30-10 p.m. Desert moonlight on the white winter snow is beautiful. Add the city lights in the background and you have Outdoor Recreation' s Lunar Snowshoe Hike. Participants should be in fair shape, but this is not a difficult hike and is designed for just about everyone. Trip is held in the Sandia Mountains and includes transportation, leader, snowshoe rental and hot chocolate. Please dress properly and bring snacks and water. Kids must be a minimum of 12 years old and accompanied by a legal guardian. Cost is $15 a person.

Introduction to Avalanche Clinic
If you do any travel in the winter back country this clinic is a must. Learn the basics of winter travel, avalanche awareness, snow reading and much more. This class is a prerequisite to the field avalanche courses. Jan. 23 and Feb. 15, 5-8 p.m., $10 a person.

Avalanche Day Outing
If you have taken the Avalanche Clinic (see above), this day outing is a must. We will cover all aspects of winter travel and avalanche forecasting. Trip includes equipment, instructor and transportation. You must have proper clothing, backpack, footwear, snacks, lunch and lots of water. Cost is $35 a person, Feb. 18. Location to be determined depending on snow pack!

Bundles for Babies: Provides information to help parents prepare for and adjust to a new baby. Air Force families receive a gift bundle compliments of the Air Force Aid Society. Army, Navy and Marine families receive a layette. Jan. 22, 9:30-11:45 a.m.

DTAP Workshop: The Disabled Transition Assistance Program is for separating/retiring members who will or might qualify for the VA Vocational Rehabilitation Program. Learn about this and other assistance, including Benefit Delivery at Discharge. Tuesday 10:30 a.m.-Noon in Room 120.

FUNTIME: A playgroup for parents and preschoolers. Activities such as singing, dancing, listening to stories and crafts. Mondays, 10:30-11:45 a.m.

Pre-separation Briefing: Briefing covers a wide range of benefits and services available to transitioning military personnel and their families. Members can participate in the monthly group briefing or schedule an individual appointment. Child/Parent Playgroups
Family Advocacy sponsors two playgroups weekly. Wednesdays the group meets from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Youth Center and Fridays from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Maxwell Child Development Center. Call 846-0139.

New Parent Support Program

Program Seeks Providers
The Family Child Care Program is seeking new providers. Applicants in the FCC program are offered training and free advertising. Homes are needed to provide care for special needs, swing shifts, evening shifts and non traditional hours. For information call 846-1802.

Parent/Child Activity Group

Return Home Care Program
Receive 16 hours of free child care per child for children ages 12 and under, when returning home after 30 days or more in direct support of Operation Enduring Freedom and the Global War on Terrorism; must use within 30 days of return. Call 846-1802 for information.

2007 Youth of the Year

The Congressional Award
This is a noncompetitive program open to all 14-23 year olds. The award recognizes young people for achieving individual goals in four program areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration. Scholarship
The Kirtland Officers' Spouses' Club is offering scholarships for military dependents. Applicants must be high school seniors, continuing education students or spouses who have not received a four-year degree. Applications are available in the thrift shop, base education center, Mountain View Club and the Airman and Family Readiness Center. Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 26.

Spouses in Action
Spouses in Action meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Kirtland Family Housing Town Center. Spouses in Action is open to all spouses of military and civilian employees. Our mission is to promote a sense of community by working together as volunteers and supporting various base entities which serve the people of Kirtland AFB. The Kirtland Officers' Spouses' Club Web site's new address is http://kirtlandosc.com/. The KOSC a 501(C) 3 nonprofit association and raises funds to sponsor charitable, educational and welfare projects here and in the local community. We also award college scholarships to qualified military dependents. The KOSC holds monthly events at the club and there are many volunteer opportunities on the KOSC board and at the Thrift Shop for new spouses at Kirtland. LEARN TO FLY

Sweetheart Flight
In February the Kirtland Flight Center will offer a Sweetheart Flight for about 45 minutes. T-41C aircraft and instructor costs $105.30 and 182RG aircraft and instructor is $127.80 Feb. 1-14. Call 846-1072 to schedule a flight.

ARTS, CRAFTS & HOBBIES
Welding for Beginners
Mondays from 5-9 p.m. The cost is $25 a student. Learn the basics in welding using gas and mig welders. Requires at least three students and a max of five students. Call the Auto Skills Center at 846-1104.

Winterize Your Vehicle
During the winter months at the Auto Skills Center the "A" team mechanics can help or you can do-it-yourself. Available at the center: technical assistance, 16 bays, motorcycle lifts, minor repair service and a four-bay self-service car wash.

KOSC January Dinner
KOSC Famous Couples through the Years Night will be Jan. 23 at the Mountain View Club. Airmen Assistance Program
The KOSC Thrift Shop offers an assistance program for Airmen and their families. It is available for ranks E-4 and below. Ask your commander or first shirt to send an e-mail to the Thrift Shop manager, Lisa Miles, at Kirtland.thriftshop@kirtland.af.mil. Participants will be given a $100 credit per quarter. It does not need to be used all at one time, but must be spent during the quarter received.

The shop is in the Rio Grande Conference Center, open Thursday 2-6 p.m. and Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and the second Saturday of each month, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., closed on Tuesdays and holidays. Volunteers Needed
African-American/Black Heritage Month is February. According to the Web site of the Association of the Study of African-American Life and History, which was established in 1915 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the association members are the Founders of Black History Month and carry forth the work of the founder. According to the Web site, the members continue his legacy of speaking a fundamental truth to the world, which is that Africans and peoples of African descent are makers of history and co-workers in what W. E. B. Du Bois called, "The Kingdom of Culture." It says ASALH's mission is to create and disseminate knowledge about Black History.

Volunteers Wanted
Are you looking for a rewarding experience for yourself and your family? You may want to join a program to sponsor someone of a different cultural background. The International Military Training Office is looking for sponsors for foreign military officers who will attend the Flight Safety Officer Course at Kirtland AFB from March 28-June 8. These officers are pilots in their respective countries and will live either on- or off-base.
