African American Heritage Month is February
The 377th Air Base Wing Presents:
"From Slavery to Freedom: The Story of Africans in the Americas"

Meet and Hear Dr. Alan Gropman tell the compelling story of the Tuskegee Airmen and African American Military History.

Airman and Family Readiness Center
Pre-deployment Briefing: Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. or by appointment.

FUNTIME: A playgroup for parents and preschoolers. Activities such as singing, dancing, listening to stories and crafts. Mondays 10:30-11:45 a.m.

Hearts Apart Support Group: Facilitated discussion for adults and supervised activities for children. Open to all who have a deployed servicemember. Feb. 3 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Heart Link Spouses Orientation: Fun way to learn about Air Force customs/traditions, benefits, entitlements and support agencies and services on base. Today, 7:45 a.m.-Noon.

Preseparation Briefing: Briefing covers a wide range of benefits and services available to transitioning military personnel and their families. Members can participate in the monthly group briefing or schedule an individual appointment. The DD Form 2648, Pre-separation Counseling Checklist, which is required for final out-processing, will be completed.

Child/Parent Playgroups
Family Advocacy sponsors two playgroups weekly. Wednesdays the group meets from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Youth Center and Fridays from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Maxwell Child Development Center. Call 846-0139.

Give Parents a Break
Feb. 2 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. Call the Gibson CDC at 846-1103 or Maxwell CDC at 853-5521 for information and requirements for participating in the Give Parents a Break Program.

Program Seeks Providers
The Family Child Care Program is seeking new providers. Applicants in the FCC program are offered training and free advertising. Homes are needed to provide care for special needs, swing shifts, evening shifts and nontraditional hours. For information call 846-1802.

Parent/Child Activity Group
Parents and their children enjoy time together the second and fourth Tuesday each month from 10:30-11:45 a.m. in the Airman and Family Readiness Center. Registration is not required. For more information contact Sheri at 453-2609.

Return Home Care Program
Receive 16 hours of free child care per child for children ages 12 and under, when returning home after 30 days or more in direct support of Operation Enduring Freedom and the Global War on Terrorism; must use within 30 days of return. Call 846-1802.

2007 Youth of the Year
We are looking for the best teens in the community. Youth ages 14-18 can pick up a Youth of the Year package and compete to be recognized as the best on the base in areas of leadership, service, character, academics and future goals. Contact Youth Programs for more information at 853-5437.

The Congressional Award
This is a noncompetitive program open to all 14-23 year olds. The award recognizes individuals for achieving goals in four program areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration. If you are a teen who wants to develop compassion, a sense of responsibility and practical skills, this program is for you. Contact Youth Programs at 853-5437.

Scholarship
The Kirtland Officers' Spouses' Club is offering scholarships for military dependents. Applicants must be high school seniors, continuing education students or spouses who have not received a four-year degree. Applications are available in the thrift shop, base education center, Mountain View Club and the Airman and Family Readiness Center. Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 26.

LEARN TO FLY
Have you always wanted to learn how to fly? The Kirtland Flight Training Center offers ground and flight instruction programs to help you earn your private, commercial and instrument ratings. The Aero Club is open to everyone military and civilian. Call 846-1072.

Sweetheart Flight
In February the Kirtland Flight Center will offer a Sweetheart Flight for about 45 minutes. T-41C aircraft and instructor costs $105.30 and 182RG aircraft and instructor is $127.80 Feb. 1-14. Call 846-1072 to schedule a flight.

Operating Hours for MVD

Airmen Assistance Program
The KOSC Thrift Shop offers an assistance program for Airmen and their families. It is available for ranks E-4 and below. Participants will be given a $100 credit per quarter and must be spent during the quarter received.

Volunteers Needed
African-American/Black Heritage Month is February. According to the Web site of the Association of the Study of African-American Life and History, which was established in 1915 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the association members are the Founders of Black History Month and carry forth the work of the founder.

According to the Web site, the members continue his legacy of telling the world that Africans and peoples of African descent are makers of history and co-workers in what W. E. B. Du Bois called, "The Kingdom of Culture."

Volunteers Wanted
Are you looking for a rewarding experience for yourself and your family? You may want to join a program to sponsor someone of a different cultural background. The International Military Training Office is looking for sponsors for foreign military officers who will attend the Flight Safety Officer Course at Kirtland AFB from March 28-June 8.

These officers are pilots in their respective countries and will live either on- or off-base. The purpose of the sponsorship program is to provide assistance and information, especially in the early adjustment period. For information, call Ms. Hultberg at 846-9812.
