The Commander’s Cup Trophy, awarded for excellence in intramural sports throughout the seasons, was bestowed on the 377th Security Forces Squadron Sept. 24, 2018, at the 8 a.m. commanders call.

The SFS took part in all four intramural sports—flag football, basketball, volleyball and softball—winning championships in basketball and softball, according to Kirtland Fitness Center Director Steve Bowlin.

“Congratulations to the 2018 Commander’s Cup Champions—our [377th] Security Forces Squadron,” Bowlin said.

He explained that the Commander’s Cup competition ends with softball and begins anew during flag football season, which kicked off Sept. 10. Units across Kirtland have reset the competition and are looking to improve their prospects on the gridiron. They will continue a run toward the overall trophy, culminating on the softball diamond in August of 2019.

The SFS, which recently celebrated after defeating WSSS Van Houten 15-11 in the softball championship game Sept. 6, was again hoisting a trophy after 377th Air Base Wing Commander Col. Richard Gibbs surprised them at commanders call.

Staff Sgt. Michael LeMaster, a football and softball team member for SFS, said the Cup was meaningful after a couple years of tough competition.

"It feels great to bring the trophy home to our squadron," LeMaster said. "After making it to the [softball] championship game and coming up short two years in a row, it was nice to finish strong. Especially since a lot of our guys, including myself, are PCSing in February. Hopefully we can [win] in football this year, which is the last trophy currently not with the SFS."

Other cup competitors included The Air Force Research Laboratory New Mexico, Weapons System Security Squadron (also a 377th Security Forces Group unit) and the Space and Missile Systems Center. SMC took the 2018 Volleyball crown while AFRL NM took a top-four spot in each intramural competition.
