Kirtland AFB, Cibola National Forest implement Stage III fire restrictions

On May 19, 2022, Cibola National Forest implemented Stage III fire restrictions. The order is necessary to protect public health and safety due to extreme fire danger. It will be in effect through December 31, 2022, or until rescinded. Concurrently, Kirtland AFB restricted range operations and any directed-energy events that have the possibility to ignite a fire. Also prohibited are non-essential testing, fires, fireworks, smoking, pyrotechnics, explosives, open welding, and off-road driving/parking. To request an exemption, work through your chain of command. Email all range-associated exemption requests to Range Management at 377abw.xp.rangemgtoffice@us.af.mil.

The Air Force Research Laboratory’s Demonstration and Science Experiments (DSX) spacecraft has been operating since its launch in June 2019, conducting unique studies into the interactions of radio waves, space plasma and the radiation belts in near-Earth space. AFRL is studying how very low frequency (VLF) radio transmissions travel through the low-density plasma in medium Earth orbit (MEO) and how the transmitting antenna interacts with this plasma during transmissions. DSX is the first mission designed to conduct VLF transmissions detectable at a distance in near-Earth space, and observe their effects.
